Enjoy Coatí (Nasua narica), our take on Salvadoran hot chocolate. We grew up drinking chocolate, but it's not the taste you might be used to. Coffee was brought into El Salvador a couple hundred years ago; Cocoa is from here. The ancient Maya, Pipils and Lenca people who inhabited El Salvador even used cacao beans as currency. 

In modern El Salvador, the chocolate drink is just as common as coffee and it's considered a tipico, or typical food. It's had in the evenings, in celebrations, in baptisms, in posadas, and other celebrations. A drink for special occasions that can now be enjoyed daily. Our version is less sweet as the usual one in El Salvador and comes in powder form for ease of use.

If it's your first time trying this ancestral Maya drink, or you remember it from home, you and your family are sure to enjoy this family friendly hot cocoa. It's made with 100% Salvadoran grown organic cocoa beans, cane sugar, almonds, and cinnamon.

POWDER MIX - READY TO DRINK JUST MIX WITH HOT WATER or MILK

Mix 30g per cup or to taste. Mix with boiling water for traditional Salvadoran taste. Can also be mixed with milk.

If you mix it with hot milk we recommend dissolving the mix with a small amount of boiling water, then mixing with hot (not boiling) milk. If drinking it in water, the traditional Salvadoran way, make sure to use boiling water from a kettle, pot or microwave oven.

If you have an espresso machine, dissolve the mix powder with hot water and get it spinning with the steam wand. This is the way we prepare it in store. See the video for more information.
