Who is OPi ?
You may have seen OPi on social media or maybe even in person if you have been to El Salvador this year (2024). He’s a little crocheted pill that my wife made for me as a stocking stuffer Xmas 2022 when we were back in Canada. At the time, he was just a pill with no face/no name or string/pin to attach to anything. I showed him to my bitcoinner friends at meetups and people seemed to like him so my wife started putting a face and a string so people can hang him from the rear view mirror. Our friends gave us some sats for him and it was fun to “earn” sats in real life.
Fast forward to 2024 and we have moved to El Salvador. We attended an event sponsored by Mi Primer Bitcoin and learned about their ethos and grassroots, low time preference path for a better world. It was then that we decided the best way to help bitcoin adoption in El Salvador (and the world) was to help MPB. MPB does not accept donations with strings attached, nor grants from any governments. Through their tireless work, they have gone from teaching 1 single student in their first class 3 years ago to teaching in over 300 public schools in ES , expanding to more schools and younger grades next year. Their material is open source and used in over 30 countries with over 35,000 students having completed the course. With those things in mind, we gave him the name OPiand my wife made a few hundred of them (each taking 35-40min) and we sold them at meetups, halving party and conferences with every single sat going directly Mi Primer Btc. It is our way to show gratitude to a country that has welcomed us with open arms.
We were resigned to only selling OPi locally since there was no feasible way to ship a tiny little pill outside El Salvador because the shipping would cost more than each OPi.
This is where GoodBeans comes into the picture. At the recent Adopting Bitcoin conference in ES, we attended a talk from Gabe, one of the owners of GoodBeans who described how they ship their coffee all over the world and that most customers pay in sats. Light bulb moment happened at the conference and OPi is now available outside El Salvador essentially with free shipping (included with coffee purchase) all sats going to Mi Primer Bitcoin, and the customer enjoys a 5% discount on the coffee purchased! All we ask is for you to display OPi somewhere scenic and post him on the socials to help decentralize Opi. We do not make any sats selling OPi, all sales of OPi is only done via the Mi Primer Bitcoin merchant store.
